"The Urban Geography鈥� journal, which has been at the forefront of urban scholarship published the scholarly article co-authored by SPIA Dean Dr. Anar Valiyev and SPIA alumnae Lucy Wallwork.

The joint article, entitled 鈥淧ost-Soviet urban renewal and its discontents: gentrification by demolition in Baku鈥� rigorously examines gentrification phenomenon of urban dictionary in the context of post-Soviet cities like Baku.

The authors deeply researched how a particular form of state-led 鈥済entrification by demolition鈥� is unfolding in Baku. Reinforced by the attentive analyses of recently demolished Sovetsky district, this carefully edited article found an analogy between Baku鈥檚鈥渓andscape of gentrification鈥� and muscular state-led 鈥済entrification by demolition鈥� that is characteristic of Chinese cities.
